Driving in Burkina Faso as a visitor
Usually yes. Burkina Faso expects visiting drivers to carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence, and rental desks ask for one. It matters most when your licence is not printed in the Latin alphabet.
Standard delivery included. Need it sooner? Express lands by for $25 more.
Reviewed July 2026 · A translation of your own licence, carried with it. Not a government permit.

On the road in Burkina Faso
At the pump
Petrol (essence) and diesel (gasoil) are available at branded stations in Ouagadougou and Bobo-Dioulasso, where major cards are often accepted, but in rural areas stations are sparse and fuel may be sold informally in bottles. Keep the tank above half and carry CFA-franc cash.
After a crash
Stop, do not move the vehicles, and contact the police/gendarmerie (police 17, fire/rescue 18) and obtain an official report for any claim. In injury cases wait for authorities; given the wider security situation, avoid lingering at remote crash scenes after dark.
