Driving in Mali as a visitor
Usually yes. Mali expects visiting drivers to carry an International Driving Permit alongside their national licence, and rental desks ask for one. It matters most when your licence is not printed in the Latin alphabet.

Reviewed July 2026 · A translation of your own licence, carried with it. Not a government permit.

On the road in Mali
At the pump
Petrol (essence) and diesel (gasoil) are sold at attended stations, plentiful in Bamako and on major roads but scarce in remote regions, so keep the tank full before long trips. Cash (CFA francs) is expected; card acceptance is rare.
After a crash
Drive on the right and carry a warning triangle, first-aid kit and fire extinguisher (mandatory). If a crash occurs and it is safe, it is often safer to drive to the nearest police or military checkpoint to report it than to remain at the scene; emergency numbers are police 17, ambulance 18, fire 15, though service is unreliable outside central Bamako.
